The Household Debt of Overseas Chinese in Siam during the Republican Period from the Perspective of Teochew Remittance

华侨汇回家乡的款项往往会被用于解决各种家庭问题,其中就包括债务问题。债务是华侨在寄回家乡的书信中较为关注的问题。在偿还过程中,有人会将整笔汇款用于还债,有人选择将部分款项用于还债,也有人迫于现实只能徐徐渐进、分期还款。与此同时,无力还债的现象也时有发生。华侨家庭债务问题的背后折射出近代传统农村社会的困境。

Overseas Chinese usually sent money to their hometown in order to resolve kinds of family problems,like the house debtwhich has raised great concerns among those letters.Actually,some of them would like to repay the debt with all of money while some of them just wanted to repay the debt with part of their money.Others had to repay the debt gradually considering the reality.At the same time,the situation that some others could not able to pay their household debt took place from time to time.The household debt of overseas Chinese reflected the dilemma of the traditional rural society in modern time.
