Based on folklore documents and multiple historical materials, this paper sorts out the origins of the boat dwellers in Mao Village of Guilin City and the changes in their life on boat and land. The paper explores how they shape a new identity and follow the mainstream culture and state authority by using national discourse symbols through restating their ancestral origins and historical rights, constructing clans and changing their claim of belief,so as to grasp discourse power and maximize benefits. The case study illustrates the approach to achieving national identity by marginalized people.
