淑·布莱德赫是托马斯·哈代最后一部小说《无名的裘德》中令人印象深刻的女性角色。她行为不羁,思想反叛,被认为是颠覆性的新女性。但是淑的不羁行为和反叛思想并未产生真正的颠覆效果,她的“新”里含有无法摆脱的“旧”,新旧交织构成淑“新女性”形象的悖论。这一悖论不仅展示了《无名的裘德》的丰富内涵,也揭示了性别政治的复杂性和多维性。

Sue Bridehead,the impressive woman character in Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure,is rebellious in action and unconventional in thoughts.However,Sue’s actions and thoughts engender no real subversive effect.On the contrary,they show how Sue is contained by the orthodox society.Instead of undermining the society she rebels against,Sue Bridehead reinforces the official agenda and social structure through her actions and her final sacrifice.Her attempts to rewrite herself are drowned in the rearrangement of the power relations of her time.
