南社文人庞树柏与中国近代教育

Nanshe Scholar PANG Shubai’s Role in Modern Chinese Education

南社文人庞树柏,在清末变革之际接受了儒家传统教育的熏陶,又经历了现代教育的濡染,他在诗、词、文的创作中传递着经世致用的思想,同时将之运用于教育实践。他在常熟协助乡绅开办小学,与南社成员一起倡建女学,在圣约翰大学里教授中国传统文学,为多个领域培养了杰出人才。他虽然没有系统的有关教育思想的论著,但他注重因材施教、强调男女教育平等、注重教育对社会发展的推动作用,为中国传统教育的现代化进程做出了突出的贡献。

Nanshe scholar PANG Shubai received both traditional Confucian training and modern education during the transformation period of late Qing Dynasty.He disseminated humanistic pragmaticism in his literary compositions,and applied it to his educational practice.In Changshu,he helped the local gentry found primary schools,advocated women’s schools with other Nanshe members,and taught Chinese classics at St.John’s University.He cultivated outstanding talents in various fields.Even without systematic elaboration on educational principles,he paid attention to student cultivation in accordance to their aptitude,stressed male-female educational equality,and emphasized the role of education in social development promotion.All of these activities greatly contributed to modernizing traditional Chinese education.
