By measuring the effect of fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether carboxylic acid sodium(AEC-9 Na)on the intrinsic viscosity of hydrophobically associating polymer AP-P4 through the capillary method,it was found that the intrinsic viscosity of AP-P4 at different mass concentrations can be accurately measured and its intrinsic viscosity is 1 000 mL/g when the volume fraction of AEC-9 Na is above 40%,which meant that AEC-9 Na can block the interaction of hydrophobic groups with a volume fraction of 40%.The absorbance of AP-P4 under AEC-9 Na was determined by UV and fluorescent spectroscopy. The results showed that as the volume fraction of AEC-9 Na increased,UV and fluorescence absorbance of AP-P4 decreased gradually. While the volume fraction was above 40%,UV and fluorescence absorbance remained almost unchanged. These results indicated that AEC-9 Na can block the interaction of hydrophobic groups so that the intrinsic viscosity of hydrophobically associating polymers can be measured.
