Paul Auster(1947—)is regarded as one of the most outstanding contemporary American writers.His numerous works reflect his deep concern for the living and spiritual state of modern people."The Brooklyn Follies"(2005)is one of the representative works.He was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize due to the novel in 2006.In the novel,Auster,with a hopeful and positive attitude,vividly depicted how some tired people in Brooklyn,New York got out of their predicament and attained redemption in soul.As a leading figure of post-classical narratology,James Phelan is an active theorist in the field of American Narratology,especially his rhetoric narratology which has a far-reaching influence on the field of criticism.The research on the narrative progression is favored by the majority of researchers.This paper will interpret the predicament and redemption of"The Brooklyn Follies"by using the core concept of narrative progression—instability in order to add a new perspective and enrich corpus to Paul Auster’s research in China.
