摘要
尼尔·拉布特的戏剧《施恩座》以"9·11"恐怖袭击为直接背景,是美国"9·11"戏剧中最受评论界关注的作品。在"9·11"袭击这一极端的伦理环境下,男主人公本只考虑个人私利,做出抛妻弃子、欺骗情人、漠视亡者、逃避责任的非道德选择。女主人公艾比在经历了一系列道德创伤后逐渐觉醒,恢复了基本的伦理意识,选择走出孤立自私的个人世界,回到社会共同体,重建自我与他者的联系。通过两个普通纽约人对"9·11"事件的反应,拉布特拷问了所谓的"美国之道",揭露了隐藏在美国社会文化中的自私、冷漠、欺骗、背叛、机会主义、极端个人主义等道德伦理问题。该剧质疑了"9·11"文学中的悲情叙事和英雄叙事,提供了观照复杂现实的不同视角,体现了"9·11"戏剧的教诲功能和伦理价值。
With 9/11 terrorist attack as its backdrop,Neil LaBute’s The Mercy Seat has attracted more critic attention than other American 9/11 drama.In the extreme ethical conditions,two New Yorkers make different ethi⁃cal choices:Ben is self-centered and amoral,abandoning his family,cheating his lover,indifferent to 9/11 victims,and shirking his civic duty,while Abbey regains her ethical sense and chooses to re-embrace the social communi⁃ty and re-establish the bond between self and the other after suffering a series of moral traumas.Labute examines the paradox and crises of the so called“American Way”and reveals the ethical problems such as opportunism,utilitarianism and radical individualism prevalent in American society through the two New Yorkers responses to 9/11 attack.The play challenges the dominant mourning and heroism discourses in the wake of 9/11 and provides a different perspective to understand post-9/11 America,which embodies the ethical value of literature.
