通过搜集古代医籍及现代医家临床应用文献,总结出石菖蒲具有以下特点:临床应用范围为4~30 g。临床根据疾病、证型、症状的不同而选择不同的剂量,如化痰开窍、行气化浊治疗抑郁、哮喘、认知功能障碍,其用量为4~6 g;祛风镇痉、开窍豁痰治疗失眠、小儿抽动症、小儿多动症、头痛、咳嗽变异性哮喘、麻痹性肠梗阻、冠心病、高血压病,用量为6~10 g;理气活血、化瘀祛浊治疗溃疡性结肠炎、癫痫共患抽动障碍、神志病、小便不利,用量为10~15 g;芳香化浊、宣痹开窍治疗痞满、2型糖尿病及其并发症、中风昏迷、脑鸣,用量为15~30 g。根据疾病、证型及症状,配伍相应中药,如气滞瘀阻常配伍胆南星、龙骨、牡蛎、远志等。
