To explore and summarize the developmental characteristics of track events in China, this paper took 14 track events from 1978 to 2018 as samples, and constructed a model of development index of track event to compare Chinese track events with the international level and the dynamic development process during the last four decades. The results showed that:1)Chinese women’s track events were slightly better than men’s,but they showed certain characteristics(the development of men’s short-distance events were slightly better than that of women’s,and the development of women’s middle-and long-distance events were better than that of men’s);2)in the last 20 years,China’s 20 km race walking had reached the international level, and the men’s 110 m hurdle had achieved very good results;3)the overall development level of the team events was not good, but the men’s 4×100 m relay during 2008-2018 and women’s 4×100 m relay in 1999-2008 developed well;4)men’s 800 m,1500 m,5000 m and 3000 m obstacle events developed slowly, while the developments of women’s 200 m,400 m and 800 m events were relatively slow in China;5)many track events in China had fastest growth in the period of 1999-2008,which might have a great relation with the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It is suggested to take the men’s short distance events as a breakthrough, and to reshape and maintain the advantages of men’s and women’s 20 km race walking events.
