While her earlier work is more realist and traditional, the British author Margaret Drabble’s later writing demonstrates a postmodern turn. Her work in the new millennium are informed by her attention to globalization and experimental postmodern meta-narrative. The Red Queen establishes a dialogue between the past and present, human and spirit, through a variety of narrators and overlapping, multilayered narrative voices. The polyphonic narrative voices contribute to a regeneration of meanings, and a deepening of the textual connotations and tensions. In this manner, the fiction draws readers’ attention to such universal, philosophical questions of mankind as life and suffering regardless of time.
