The Excavation of the Coffin of Liu He, Marquis Haihun of the Western Han Dynasty,in the Lab in Nanchang, Jiangxi

西汉海昏侯刘贺墓园位于江西省南昌市新建区大塘坪乡观西村老裘村民小组东北约800米的墎墩山上,其东北为新建区铁河乡的汉代紫金城城址。考古调查和发掘情况表明,海昏侯刘贺墓园是结构完整、布局清晰、保存完好的汉代列侯墓园,对于研究西汉列侯园寝制度具有重要的学术价值。

The coffin of Liu He, Marquis Haihun of the Western Han Dynasty sat in the northeastern corner of the eastern section of the tomb chamber. It comprised a stand, an outer, and an inner coffin: all relatively well preserved. Due to the prevailing environmental conditions and the state of the remains, the archaeologists in charge of this excavation decided to move the main coffin into a laboratory to make a detailed excavation and undertake conservation. All three parts-the outer and inner coffins and the stand-were excavated in three steps, benefiting from the indoor environment, controlled schedules, and devices available in the laboratory. Some information about the remains was recorded, and a variety of relics in different materials were effectively conserved. This endeavour provided some detailed data and material information for further comprehensive archaeological research.
