A Postcolonial Analysis of “Mimicry” in The Round House

《圆屋》是美国印第安裔女作家路易斯·厄德里克的著作之一。小说除了讲述了一位印第安少年为母亲追寻正义的故事以外,还显示出20世纪80年代印第安人仍未摆脱被殖民的阴影、生活在殖民者的凝视之下。本文将基于霍米·巴巴提出的模拟策略,从回敬凝视、拒绝凝视两个方面分析印第安人打破殖民权威并追寻文化身份的过程。

The Round House is one of Louise Erdrich’s masterpieces, telling a story of how a native American finds justice for his mother in his own way. In the novel, it is revealed that native Americans still live under the gaze of the colonizers, though they are supposed to be independent in the 1980 s. This thesis will analyze how native Americans employ the mimicry strategy put forward by Homi K. Bhabha, who provides the colonized with two methods to deal with the colonizer’s gaze, the return and the refusal of the gaze, to rupture the colonial discourse and pursue their cultural identity.
