Contributions of Cohen and Levinthal to Research on Absorptive Capacity

韦斯利·科恩和丹尼尔·利文索尔是创新研究领域极具影响力的经济学家和管理学家。两位学者从个体认知结构出发,开创性地提出了吸收能力的概念,认为企业在已有知识基础上评价、获取、消化、积累外部知识并进行商业化的能力决定其创新能力,进而影响创新绩效。本文旨在介绍两位学者的生平与学术成就,系统梳理吸收能力的概念、内涵、理论基础及数理模型,总结吸收能力研究成果的理论价值和实践意义,提出未来可行的研究方向。

Wesley M.Cohen and Daniel A.Levinthal are influential economists and management scientists in the field of innovation research.Starting from individual cognitive structure,the two scholars creatively put forward the concept of absorptive capacity,arguing that the ability of firms to evaluate,acquire,absorb,assimilate,accumulate and commercialize external knowledge on the basis of existing knowledge determines their innovation ability and performance.This paper introduces the lives and academic achievements of the two scholars,systematically combs the concept and connotation development,theoretical basis and mathematical models of absorptive capacity,summarizes the theoretical value and practical significance of the research results of absorptive capacity,and puts forward the feasible directions for future research.
