This article examines the macro-level context in which the demand of"equal pay for equal work between men and women"emerged in the early 1950 s in an interaction of three elements, value, institution and events. At the micro level,it reviews the historical events whereby Shen Jilan mobilized women to participate in production and women in Xigou fought for equal pay for men and women. It thus identifies that labor and gender as two modes of organizing the new society have helped working women gain subjectivity in the labor process. This article suggests that the tension existing in mind and body among working women serves both to enable and restrict the realization of equal pay for equal work.
