A Textual Criticism on HU Jing’s Visit to Ryukyu Islands as Self-appointed Envoy

晚明胡靖随从奉诏赴琉球册封的使节杜三策出使琉球所作的《琉球记》,历来被视为代杜三策而作的使录,以致褒贬不一,聚讼不已。而从其作此文的缘起,系日记事的写实,以及寄游历以明志的文学风格诸方面考辨,可知此文乃作为文人从客的"自成使节"的文学游记。

Journey to the Ryukyu Islands,the travelogue written by HU Jing in the late Ming dynasty,has always been regarded as a diplomatic record which HU ghostwrote for DU San-ce,the envoy who undertook the mission of conferring a title upon Ryukyu during his journey to Ryukyu with HU as his attache.Therefore,it received mixed reviews.Based on the textual criticism on the origin of the travelogue,the daily record of actual events,the literary style of showing aspirations by writing travelogues etc,we can draw a conclusion that the travelogue is written by a man of letters who followed the official as a self-appointed envoy.
