Learning on Johnston's Regional Social Views from Lion and Dragon in Northern China

庄士敦是英国近代汉学家,国际著名的中国通,毕生致力于近代中国研究。他两次任职威海卫,担任过最高长官,前后长达18年之久。《狮龙共舞》是他治理威海卫的心得体会,主要反映其区域社会观。他把威海卫作为晚清帝国的缩影,来考察威海卫的社会风貌,并将其与西方社会进行了简单比较,试着解释这些社会现象产生的原因,并试图理解近代中国社会。

Johnston was modern British sinologist,the famous China expert,who dedicated his life to study mordern Chinese.He dominated Weihaiwei twice times for almost 18 years long.Lion and Dragon in northern China was his experiences which reflected his regional social views.He took Weihaiwei as a microcosm of the empire of the late Qing dynasty to investigate the social features of Weihaiwei and made a simple comparison with the western society,trying to explain the causes of these social phenomena and to understand the modern Chinese society.
