The Social Mobility Index(SMI) attempts to establish a new ranking value orientation by measuring the degree to which the university improves social mobility of graduates from lower social classes. And it leads more people to pay attention to the disadvantaged groups, highlighting its unique humanistic care. This article focuses on the unique characteristics of the SMI by analyzing its background, motivation, purposes, data indicators and calculations, etc., and by discussing the controversies and impacts it exercises. Based on this, we are going to reexamine: how to reshape social responsibility of higher education in order to promote social mobility;pay attention to the equity of university evaluation;appreciate the contribution to social mobility form non-top ranking four years-colleges.
