Beicui(悲催) is a hot word on the Internet in recent years. There are many discussions about its form of writing and source of meaning. We believe that cui(摧) and cui(催) have originated from the same source, which later underwent a split in meaning. Beicui(悲摧) is a juxtaposing structure conforming to the appropriate word-formation motivation. The meaning of sad as implied in cui(摧) has developed from the original meaning of hurt. Similar phenomena of sense extension also exist in the semantically homogeneous words of cui(摧).
