Wen Yiduo's View on Poetic Rhetoric and His Rhetorical Practice

闻一多是著名的现代白话诗人,也是研究中国古典诗歌卓有成就的学者,是理论与实践相结合的学者型诗人,其诗歌修辞理论与修辞观在他的古典诗歌(格律诗)与现代白话诗的创作中都有鲜明的体现。闻一多虽然表面上非常推崇郭沫若等人的现代白话诗,但骨子里却始终不能忘情于中国古典诗歌的传统修辞技法,注重内容与形式的和谐统一,跟孔子"文质彬彬"的修辞观相吻合。

Wen Yiduo is a well-known modern vernacular poet, an outstanding scholar in the research of Chinese ancient poetry, and a scholastic poet in the combination of theory and practice, his theory about poetic rhetoric and rhetorical views are clearly reflected in his metrical and vernacular poems. Wen Yiduo speaks highly of the modern vernacular poems by poets such as Guo Moruo, however, he can’t stay away from the traditional rhetorical skills in Chinese ancient poems. By stressing the harmonious uniformity of content and form, Wen Yiduo arrives at an agreement with Confucius who also advocates the rhetorical view of "harmony of refinement and substance".
