Doppelganger Motif in Hermann Hesse’s Works during His Life Crisis

以双影人母题为切入点,分析黑塞人生危机时期的代表作《德米安》和《荒原狼》,认为作品中出现的双影人形象可归为两类:第一类是作为主人公原本市民价值观对立面的双影人,他们的出现象征着主人公内心的分裂;第二类的双影人与主人公有着心灵感应的关系,是主人公内心声音的化身,他们引领主人公走上了寻找身份认同之路。主人公的自身发展反映在其与双影人的人物关系中。通过观察这些人物关系的发展,读者可以对作品主人公寻找身份认同的过程有更清晰的认识和更深刻的理解。

Regarding the doppelganger motif as the breakthrough point,this paper analyzes the two representative works Demian and Steppenwolf of Hermann Hesse during his life crisis and comes to the conclusion that the doppelgangers in these works can be divided into two types.The first type of doppelganger is the antithesis of the citizen value concepts,which the protagonists used to hold.Their appearance symbolizes the protagonist’s soul splitting.The second type of doppelganger has Telepathy with the protagonist.They are the inner voice of the protagonist and lead him to the way of seeking identity.The protagonist’s development is reflected in his relationship with the doppelgangers.By analyzing the development of the relationship between the protagonist and his doppelgangers,the readers could have a better understanding of the identity-seeking process in Hesse’s works.
