This article looks back at the fiction creation in Hong Kong during the 1940-1960 period. It analyzes the images of the writers in the three novels of Poor Lane by Lu Lun,The Sun Is Down by Shu Xiangcheng, and The Drunkard by Liu Yizhen. From 1940 to 1960,a hybrid and inclusive culture emerged in Hong Kong that integrated the ideological tradition of liberalism,a prosperous port and commercial culture, and the ideas from left to middle and right wings. The images of the three writers in the novels retain the fine moral character of the traditional Chinese cultural personality, such as integrity and thoughtfulness, and maintain the value standpoint that the intellectuals should be independent of the mainstream society of Hong Kong.Meanwhile, they also adjust themselves to adapt to the society to varying degrees.Their existential distress and exploration approaches are typical of the region and their times, reflecting the difficult process of intellectual writers establishing their self-identity consciousness in the modernization and commercialization process of Hong Kong from 1940 to 1960.
