By comparing and analyzing canes with a turtledove-shaped handle excavated from Han tombs and images of such canes,the author explores identities of the tomb occupants,penetrating the institution of bestowing a cane with a turtledove-shaped handle to venerate the old and its prevalence in Han Dynasty.The research is of importance for in-depth understanding of the positive role this institution played in maintaining social stability at the grassroots level.
