Ding Baozhen's Governance of Sichuan and the Official Struggle in the Early Years of Guangxu

光绪初年,丁宝桢入主四川后进行大刀阔斧的改革,打击了诸多既得利益者,招致川省臬司方浚颐等部分官绅的不满。对丁宝桢不满的官绅在朝中引援,以川籍京官吴镇为代表的言官极力弹劾丁宝桢,另一方面他们交结朝中掌权的南派人物,特别是入川的钦差大臣。川省官绅和朝中川籍言官以及入川的南派钦差,三方势力屡屡为难丁宝桢,为其改革带来了较大的阻力。然而,丁宝桢不畏参劾,适时反击。在好友阎敬铭的帮助下,阻挠丁宝桢改革的重要人物大多被参纠革职,这为丁宝桢督川改革营造了一个较好的官场环境。对这些官场斗争的考察有助于加深对丁宝桢的研究。

In the early years of Guangxu,Ding Baozhen carried out a large-scale reform after governing and inspecting Sichuan,which hit many people with vested interests,and caused dissatisfaction of some officials and gentry,such as Fang Junyi,the Sichuan inspector general.On the one hand,they sought support in the imperial court.For example,the imperial censors represented by Wuzhen,the capital official of Sichuan,tried to impeach Ding Baozhen.On the other hand,they fawn on the powerful Southern faction figures in the court,especially the imperial envoy who entered Sichuan.These three forces often puzzled Ding Baozhen and brought great resistance and hindrances to his reform.However,Ding Baozhen was not afraid of impeachment and fought back in time.With the help of his good friend Yan Jingming,most of the important people who obstructed Ding Baozhen's reform were dismissed or punished,which created a better officialdom environment for Ding Baozhen to supervise Sichuan's reform.The investigation of these official struggles will help to deepen the study of Ding Baozhen.
