On the image creation of the elderly women in The Water Margin

施耐庵在《水浒传》中塑造了10位老年女性形象,这些形象大体可分为好汉母亲和市井恶婆两类。老年女性在中国古代社会是不被重视的弱势群体,在《水浒传》中她们所占的篇幅不多,但有着不容忽视的作用:促进人物命运转折,推动故事情节发展;丰富、烘托主要人物形象;真实反映社会现实。

The image of ten elderly women are created in The Water Margin and they can be divided into two types depending on their status:the hero's mothers and common eldly women.Whether common elderly women or the hero's mother,they have distinctive features in their words and deeds.These elderly women are minor characters and looked down upon in ancient China,but they are crucial to the narration of the novel.They can change the hero's fate,move the narrative forward and enrich the characters and so on.They can reflect the reality of the society.
