《世说新语》德行篇“顾荣施炙”条释疑

The Analysis of“GU Rong-Provide-Meat-to-the-Servant”in A New Account of the Tales of the World

刘义庆《世说新语》德行篇载“顾荣施炙”一条。其中顾荣见行炙人状貌非凡是其施肉的直接原因,而其根本原因在于顾荣胸怀智局,在洛阳的孤独感和危机感促使他处处与人为善。其被杀被救之事,是在赵王伦兵败时的战乱中发生的,要杀顾荣的不是当时的执权者齐王冏,而是一个无名的士卒。“顾荣施炙”条除了表现顾荣的德行外,还有另外两个意蕴:一是通过南北方士人的德行来表现南北方士人的互讽;二是在玄学方面打破了情的阶级性,士族与普通百姓间也可有情,同时表现了世人皆有情的观念,是对王戎“最下者不及情”的一种回应。

“GU Rong-Provide-Meat-to-the-Servant”is one of the stories about virtues in LIU Yiqing's A New Account of the Tales of the World.Lierally,GU Rong's giving is based on the receiver's good appearance.However,the root cause is his broad mind and kindness.His lonely staying in Luoyang motivates him to be good to everyone.It is not the emperor of Qi who wanted to kill GU Rong but an unknown soldier.This story has two other meanings besides expressing his virtues.One is to express the mutual mocking between the people in South and North and the other is to break the bans of brotherhood between classes.It is also a response to the idea of the inferiors deserve no love.
