In order to further understanding the difficulties in constructing self identity, the paper in⁃tends to start with John Cheever’s short novel The Enormous Radio,in which the heroine Irene under⁃goes self-recognition crisis.According to Lacan’s mirror theory, the core concept is that the subject sees the object through the mirror medium and he recognizes his self-identity through the reflection of the ob⁃ject. Thus,Irene’s self-perception is distorted, split and fragmented under the influence of the media:ra⁃dio. It can be concluded that the identification process, which is generated by the radio, results in her wrong self-recognition,and Irene’s cognitive foundation is unstable and illusory on the basis of the surre⁃al radio. In addition, her denial of real self and her obsession with perfect self-image eventually lead to the distortion of her self construction, which also shows a common self-cognitive plight faced by people in the age of mechanical development.
