The Enlarged Roles of Medical Translators and Interpreters in Combating COVID-19

在抗击COVID-19过程中,我国与一些国际组织和世界各国保持紧密联系,使用多种语言通报疫情,同时也为在华外国人士提供语言服务,将中国经验译成多种语言。本研究是一项行动研究,采用参与观察的资料收集方法,对疫情期间的四个典型翻译案例进行个案分析。研究认为,新时代语境赋予了译者更多使命,译者在新冠肺炎国际紧急公共卫生事件翻译中,与医疗团队协同合作,扮演了共同决策者、和谐医患关系共同构建者、中国经验共同传播者等角色,补充和丰富了传统译者角色内涵,体现了译者的使命与担当。

In combating COVID-19,the Chinese governments at different levels with many organizations have provided language services for foreign nationals in China. The Chinese anti-epidemic experience has been translated into different languages. This study uses the data collection method of participant observation and analyzes four typical translation and interpreting cases. It is concluded that translators and interpreters are entrusted to more responsibilities during the public health emergency of international concern. They have collaborated with the medical teams and played the roles of the joint decision-makers,co-builders of a harmonious doctor-patient relationship,language experts for the medical teams,and joint narrators of the Chinese experience. All these have enriched the connotations of the roles of translators and interpreters and underlined their missions and responsibilities.
