武卫左军作为清末的一支新型军队,是捍卫京畿不可或缺的力量。在日俄战争时期,清政府宣布“局外中立”,武卫左军奉命前往中立地区戒防,在护卫领土、保护人民资财方面发挥了一定的作用。何宗逊于1900年加入武卫左军统领马玉昆的幕府,长期担任总理文案兼营务处的职务。作为内部核心要员,何氏亲历诸多军务,他的日记也从侧面展示了日俄战争中武卫左军的种种面相。

As a new army in the late Qing dynasty,Wu Wei Left Army is an indispensable force to safeguard Beijing.During The Russo-Japanese War,the Qing government declared“neutrality from the outside”,and the Wu Wei Left Army was ordered to garrison the neutral area,making contributions to the guarding of the territory and protecting the people's assets.He Zongxun joined Wu Wei Left Army in 1900 to take command of Ma Yukun’s troop,and served as the deputy secretary of the prime minister's office for a long time.As the key member in the inner circle,he personally experienced a lot of military affairs,his diary also showed from certain aspects the situation and stories of the left army in the Russo-Japanese War.
