艾烟主要有燥湿杀虫止痒、消肿止痛、止咳平喘、祛风通络等作用,除此之外,艾烟还可以用于小儿脱肛的治疗以及熏艾防治疫病。艾烟在现代临床应用中具有抗菌、抗真菌、抗病毒、抗支原体、镇痛抗炎、止痒、抗过敏、平喘等作用,主要用于外伤创口感染、褥疮、甲沟炎、指(趾)头炎、肛周脓肿术后恢复、阴道瘙痒、毛囊炎、足癣、带状疱疹、足跟痛、局部硬结、子宫脱垂、空气消毒等。艾烟在古代临床可用于治疗目赤肿痛、耳痛流脓、咳嗽、喘证、中风掣痛、偏头风等。在现代临床应用中,虽然艾烟治病种类与古代文献所记载的相似,但是其多用于外科浅表性疮疡类疾病的治疗。
