Change of Chen Duxiu's Cultural Outlook During the May 4th Period

1920年陈独秀发表《谈政治》一文,标志着他正式成为一名马克思主义者。与此相应,他的文化观也发生了根本转变,一是理论基础的转变,由进化史观转为唯物史观;二是中国传统文化观的转变,由激进否定转为批判继承;三是西方文化观的转变,由盲从资本主义文化转为信奉社会主义文化。他的这些转变,不仅深刻影响着整个新文化运动的走向,而且在一定程度上影响了20世纪中国文化史上的中西古今之争。

Chen Duxiu published Talking about Politics in 1920,indicating that he ficially became a Marxist.Correspondingly,his cultural outlook has undergone a fundamental change,which can be divided into two distinct periods:one is the transformation of the thcoretical basis,from the evolutionary historical view to the materialistic historical view;the second is the traditional Chinese cultural view from radical denial to critical inheritance;the third is the westem cultural view from blindly following the capitalist culture to the socialist culture.These changes not only profoundly affected the direction of the entire new cultural movement,but also infuenced the struggle between Chinese and Westem ancient and modern times in the history of Chinese culture in the 20th century to a certain extent.
