The Image of Overseas Chinese in Maugham's Works——Based on Two Collections of Short Stories which Called Ah King and The Trembling of a Leaf

在《阿金》《叶之震颤》这两部短篇小说集中,毛姆塑造了大量的海外中国人形象,他们虽然不是作为主要人物出现,但却表现了毛姆对海外中国人复杂的、多变的认识。这种认识的复杂性既与英国的集体想象有关,也与毛姆个人的经历有关。毛姆对海外中国人认识的转变颠覆了西方对中国人形象的一些刻板印象。

In the two collections of short stories——Ah King and The Trembling of a leaf,Maugham created a large number of images of overseas Chinese.Although they did not appear as main characters,they showed Maugham's complex and changeable understanding of overseas Chinese.The complexity of this understanding not only related to the British collective imagination,but also related to the personal experience of Maugham.Maugham's change of perception of Overseas Chinese also overturns some stereotypes about the image of China in the West.
