There are some obvious dilemmas in studies on gender and environmental concerns.Improving gender measurement implicates a promising solution.Based on data collected from a university in Beijing, and through the introduction of the Attitudes towards Women Scale(AWS)developed in gender studies, this study examines the relationship between gender role attitude and environmental concerns among undergraduate students.Research findings indicate that(1)there is a significant sex difference in gender role attitude among undergraduate students, with female students having higher AWS scores(being more egalitarian in gender)than their male counterparts, which could not be fully explained by binary and biological sex;(2)there is a significant correlation between environmental concern and gender role attitude among undergraduate students, and students with high AWS scores are more environmentally concerned;(3)compared to sex, gender role attitude has a larger effect on undergraduate students environmental concern, and its effect shows consistency across sex.Further, this study tries to re-interpret gender differences in environmental concern from a perspective of gender culture and discuss some policy implications in short.
