This article discusses how the famous Dutch sinologist and novelist Robert Hans van Gulik rebuilt Chinese detective novels with influence from both Chinese and Western cultures and literary traditions.From the perspectives of supernatural elements,torture,sex,illustration,and narrative art,it analyzes the complex relationship between Robert Hans van Gulik and Chinese literature,and illustrates a successful case of Chinese culture going global.
