Regarding textual analysis as a mode of communication, reception theory emphasizes particular readers'reading process, which coincides with certain assumptions in the skopos theory of translation studies.Especially, horizon of expectation is suggestive to translation theory and practice, and provides an insightful perspective for textual analysis of translation. As Hans-Robert Jauss and other theories proposed, the meaning of literary text relies on audience's reading process, stressing the significance of textual compliance to the reader's expectation.Seen from this perspective,we come up with a new understanding of literary text in translation. This study explores how Chinese translations of Shakespeare reach such horizon by focusing on Zhu Shenghao's and Bian Zhilin's translations of Hamlet, and analyzes how the Chinese texts meet the target audience's expectation through comparing their linguistic features and translation strategies.
