The“Many-faced Individual”in Munro’s Passion

加拿大作家艾丽丝·门罗(Alice Munro,1931-)短篇小说《激情》(Passion,2004)体现了作者对人存在方式的探求。小说主人公格蕾丝“千面一体”,即拥有多面人格的个体;描写其外表颜色的象征义又再次印证其多面人格。格蕾丝多面人格的产生基于其人格结构中的四种重要原型:人格面具,阿尼姆斯,阴影和自性。而作家门罗本人的人格与格蕾丝的多面人格存在相似之处,二者的人格都影响其生活态度及生存方式选择。因此,格蕾丝这一人物的塑造是门罗生活艺术的彰显。

Passion(2004)by Canadian short-story writer Alice Munro(1931-)showcases the author’s pursuit of living.The protagonist Grace in the story is a“many-faced”individual,possessing various personalities,which can be further confirmed by the symbolic meanings of different colours described in her appearance in the story.Grace’s various personalities are caused by four prototypes in her personality structure,which are the persona,animus,the shadow and the self.Munro,however,shares some similarities with Grace as regard personality.Both of their personalities influence their living attitudes and the choice of their living styles.Therefore,Grace,as a character,is a reflection of Munro’s living arts.
