If the Great Wall is the backbone of the Chinese people, then the Grand Canal is a vital vein through which China's lifeblood has flowed.Interconnecting the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the Suitang Grand Canal and the Zhedong Grand Canal, the Grand Canal is nearly 3,200 kilometers long with a history of over 2,500 years. It is the oldest, largest and longest man-made canal in the world and still in use today.Like the Great Wall, the Grand Canal is one of the four awe inspiring feats on the earth and a symbol of its cultural achievement for its size and grander. It has historical and cultural significance even though some of its functions have faded out.
