Polyethylene terephthalate(PET)is a linear polyester that is used in the production of plastic bottles,fibers and filaments for textile application.PET bottle is a typical successful example of mechanical recycling,and polyester fiber and filament can also be recycled very well.The 2 types of materials are obtained from different sources:while PET bottles are available as post-consumer waste from bottle collection systems,polyester waste typically accrues in the form of production scrap from a textile mill.This article covers upcycling options for PET and polyester by means of mechanical recycling into pellets and reuse for polyester continuous filament.In polyester upcycling,fine filtration and inherent viscosity(IV)increase are the key aspects that need to be addressed;the article therefore provides a detailed discussion of how to optimize these steps.
