When children's literature was booming in America in the 1990s,a series of children's picture books about Mulan were published, which played an important part in disseminating Mulan stories in America before the release of Disney animated film Mulan. As a special kind of text with pictures, children's picture books have incomparable advantages in highlighting the theme of cross-dressing in Mulan's story. This paper attempts to explore the rationality of Mulan's gender transgression in the light of her dress and gender identity, and to further reveal the deeper causes of Mulan's gender dilemma.
