The uniqueness of German universities of applied sciences has been their particularly high level of practice-application orientation in research and teaching for over 50 years.The silver bullet for a successful integration of theory and practice is cooperative higher education,which has been booming in Germany for several years.These universities are the main drivers and promoters of cooperative higher education.Within dual study programs,academic theory and workplace training are closely coordinated and integrated in innovative curricula.Since this cooperation mechanism is truly demanding,it requires a high degree of professionalism with regards to all actors involved.Excellent employment rates,a very high level of satisfaction among the companies involved and a very high demand among freshmen make cooperative higher education a real success model in German higher education.This article summarizes essential lines of its development and discusses its future challenges.
