Reexamination of Eastern Zhou Bronze Vessels with Inscribed Ornamentation

东周时期刻纹铜器,以在锻造成形的薄壁器物表面用坚硬的工具錾刻出大量由人物、神怪、动物、植物、建筑等构成的图像为主要特征[1],主要有盘、鉴[2]、匜等水器,也有少量匕、奁和箅形器。其图像的制作工艺,与同时期出现的画像铜器中或使用镶嵌技术[3],或直接铸出减地平雕式图像[4]的方法完全不同,加之图像内容非常丰富,自20世纪60年代开始就引起了学界的关注。早期的研究者多注重图像内容,认为所展现的画面或为当时贵族生活的场景,如燕礼、射礼、蒐礼等,具有一定的礼制内涵[5];或与当时的神话传说或宗教观念有关[6]。这些研究为了解当时人们的社会生活、精神世界等提供了非常好的基础。也有学者认为在春秋末年或战国早期,南、北方均出现了刻纹铜器,与当时的画像铜器一样,都是在公元前五世纪初受到北方草原民族狩猎纹的刺激而出现的新技术风格[7]。提出这种观点的学者忽略了南、北地区最早出现刻纹铜器的墓葬在年代上存在着早晚的差别。还有很多学者认同最早的刻纹铜器起源于吴越地区,年代为春秋晚期或春秋末年[8],后由这里向其他地区传播,传播的形式以整器传播的可能性最大,也不排除南方的工匠北上中原后在当地制造刻纹铜器的可能[9]。也有少数研究者认为刻纹铜器的原产地非晋莫属,但不排除其他地区有仿制的可能[10]。刻纹铜器最早起源于吴越地区可以说已基本成为学界的共识,对于在其他地区发现的刻纹铜器,目前占主流的观点认为主要是从吴越地区传播而来。笔者注意到吴越地区以外发现的部分刻纹铜器在图像内容和表现手法等方面与吴越地区存在着明显的差别,似乎应有不同的来源。因此本文以考古发现的刻纹铜器为研究对象[11],拟观察图像内容及表现方式和手法,对刻纹铜器的起源与发展、传播、制作等问题做进一步的检讨。

Through an analysis of iconography and the style of visual representation on bronze vessels with inscribed ornamentation from the Eastern Zhou,this study reveals that the kind of bronze vessels that originated in the Wuyue region and that a wholistic process of emergence,development,and disappearance can be observed.Bronze vessels with inscribed ornamentation in the Wuyue region were intensively transmitted to surrounding areas during the end of the Spring and Autumn period to the beginning of the Warring States.After the vessels came to the Central Plains,local craftsmen fashioned simulations based on imported prototypes.The same kind of bronze vessels from the state of Zhongshan,made under the influence from Central Plains and western Liaoning mountainous areas in the cultural sphere of Yan,were probably imported having passed through many hands via the Central Plains.In contrast,bronze vessels with inscribed ornamentation found in Chu,Qi and other regions were likely imported sporadically.
