On the Cultural Spirit of Guangdong Merchants from the Perspective of Modern Chinese History

自1840年鸦片战争后,受到近代历史发展的影响,广东商人的文化精神特质有了更加明显的表象:连年战事让粤商更加强悍好斗、敢想敢干;政商恶斗让粤商的社会地位和影响力不断的提升;全面开埠逼使粤商更善长对外贸易;热衷以商人会馆这种物态形式传播岭南文化;好善乐施反哺社会等,这些特质在当代粤商中依然传承。

After the Opium War in 1840,influenced by the development of modern history,the cultural and spiritual characteristics of Guangdong merchants have become more obvious:years of war made them more aggressive and daring to do things;the fierce political and business struggles promoted their social status and influence;the all-round opening of ports forced them to be more proficient in foreign trade;they were keen to spread Lingnan in the form of merchants’guild halls These characteristics are still inherited in contemporary cantonese businessmen.
