明清时期瓦当在质量和艺术性均达到顶峰,在造型、图案、色彩装饰方面具有创新、极具特色。大体有两种类型——勾头瓦(带当筒瓦)和滴水瓦(带当板瓦)当两种。官式建筑瓦当多为龙纹,民间建筑瓦当图案较多,有动物、植物、文字三种,这些图案纹饰精美的瓦当都是一笔宝贵的物质精神财富。
