Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments is a novel about narratorial identity. The innermost workings of tyrannical Gilead are explored through the narrative voices of three women protagonists who courageously pursue their identity. The novel shows how the suppressed groups and individuals strive to expand their boundaries of cognition within the oppressive field of discourse constructed by Gilead’s fundamentalist ideology. In a country where authorities use power apparatuses to erase individuality, the Bloodlines Genealogical Archives help to preserve people’s true identity and prove to be a kind of survival strategy.
