The Openness of T.A.Hsia’s Study of Chinese Modern Literature:Centering on the Differences and Dialogues from the Perspective of History

在美国汉学中国现代文学研究一脉中,夏济安的学术工作有着开创意义。由于离散背景与英语写作带来的便利,在总结“五四”文脉时,他一反现代文学研究主流史观和立场,与其多有歧异和对话。他对“五四以来的浪漫主义”加以批判性反思;对现代文学分期与主潮亦有独到看法;对“礼拜六派”文学价值的重视和肯定,在20世纪五六十年代的学术环境下可谓极富前瞻性,体现了夏济安在现代文学研究方面的开放性姿态与个人主义立场。

T.A.Hsia’s academic work is of pioneering significance in the study of Chinese modern literature in American sinology.Because of the convenience brought by the discrete background and English writing,when summarizing the context of the May 4th Movement,he opposed the mainstream historical view and standpoint of modern literature research.He held many differences and dialogues with the mainstream thoughts.He made a critical reflection on“Romanticism since the May 4th Movement”.He also had a unique view on the stages and main trend of modern literature.In the academic environment of the 1950s and 1960s,he attached great importance to,and affirmed the literary value of the“Saturday School”,which reflected his open attitude and individualistic stand in the study of modern literature.
