The Literary Connection between Cishi and States and Counties in Tang Dynasty

唐代以刺史治州郡,大批文学家出任刺史,在任期间不仅政治上有建树,文学上也有业绩,从而在刺史和州郡之间建立起密切的关系。但因州郡有不同的层级,刺史的文学水平也有高低,因而二者的结合有不同的表现。对于那些有名的州郡,其关系体现在刺史诗文能够增强名郡的文化吸引力。对于那些普通州郡,其关系在于造就名家,兴建楼阁,带动创作。对于那些无名州郡,其关系是因名人刺郡而提高当地知名度,促进当地人才成长和文学发展。对这些关系的揭示,有助于认识文学家和地域的复杂关系,考察作家创作和地域的结合度,具有一定的意义。

In Tang Dynasty,a large number of literary scholars served as cishi to govern states and counties,and during their tenure,they not only made political achievements but also literary achievements,which established a close relationship between the cishi and the governed states and counties.However,because of the different levels of states and counties,the literary levels of the cishi were also different,so the combination of the two resulted in different levels of performance.For those famous states and counties,the relationship was reflected in the fact that the poetry of the cishi could enhance the cultural appeal of the famous counties.For the ordinary counties,their relationship was to produce famous scholars,to build pavilions and buildings,and to promote creativity.For those unknown counties,the relationship was that the celebrity”s poetry enhanced the local reputation and promoted the growth of local talent and literary development.The revelation of these relationships is useful in understanding the complex relationship between literary and geographical areas,and in examining the degree of integration of writers”creativity and geographical areas.
