New Views on Liu Tai s Impeachment of Zhang Juzheng

刘台弹劾张居正是万历初年的一件大事,是正常的言官监督现象。将刘台的行为视为反对所谓“张居正改革”是毫无道理的。无论张居正身处何位,都必须接受言官的监督,而不能凌驾于言官监督之上。尽管刘台的弹劾没有充分考虑到张居正顾命身份的特殊性,难免有所偏差,但张居正对刘台的二次报复造成了严重的次生政治灾难,则是需要明确否定的,不能无视刘台弹劾的正当性而给其乱扣“保守派”“反对张居正改革”等帽子。张居正对刘台的陷害和株连集中反映着当时极不正常的政治生态。神宗为刘台平反昭雪和对参与诬陷刘台相关人员的司法调查及惩治,反映了对张居正重大过失的纠正,值得肯定。

Liu Tai s impeachment of Zhang Juzheng was an important event in the early years of Wanli reign.It was a normal phenomenon under the supervision system of the Ming Dynasty.It is unreasonable to regard Liu Tai s actions as opposition to the so-called“Zhang Juzheng reform”.No matter what position Zhang Juzheng held,he must accept the supervision of airing views,but not over it.Although Liu Tai s impeachment did not fully consider the particularity of Zhang Juzheng as assisting ministers,it was inevitable that there would be some deviation.However,Zhang Juzheng s second revenge on Liu Tai caused a serious secondary political disaster,which should be clearly denied.We should not disregard the legitimacy of Liu Tai s impeachment and wrongly accused him of being“conservative”or“opposed to Zhang Juzheng s reform”.Zhang Juzheng s framing and implicating of Liu Tai reflected the extremely abnormal political ecology at that time.Emperor Wanli s rectification of Liu Tai and the judicial investigation and punishment of those involved in the false accusation against Liu Tai reflected the correction of Zhang Juzheng s gross negligence,which was worthy of affirmation.
