“料掉”非“料想”考辨

禅门习语“料掉没交涉”是禅师告诫学人言行背离禅法甚远的责备语。有学者却从字面出发,认为“料掉”是“料想”义。其实“料掉”乃“辽窎”之借音,意为“远远”“辽远”。“料掉没交涉”犹言“远远不合禅法”。

“Liao diao Mei Jiao She”(料掉没交涉)is an idiom of reproach language.It is used to warn a learner whose words and actions deviate from Buddhist doctrine.Some scholars believe that“Liao Diao”(料掉)means“Liao Xiang”(料想).But the former is actually two words whose pronunciations were borrowed from“Liao Diao(辽窎)”,which means far away.Therefore,“Liao diao Mei Jiao She”(料掉没交涉)is synonymous with“远远不合禅法”(far away from Buddhist doctrine).
