Coarse languages such as expletives and sex-charged taboos are not uncommon in English movie,Scent of a Woman. The impact exerted by ideology on Chinese subtitling for coarse languages in this movie is approached from perspectives of political, aesthetic and ethical constraints. It is pointed out that,to meet the requirement of censorship, appeal to the aesthetic norms and conform to ethical code of Chinese audience, the coarse languages, especially those by Frank are softened up or even rewritten, thus screening off a foul-mouthed Frank, and re-projecting the image of Frank.Meanwhile, the paper is intended to offer a new perspective for study of Chinese subtitling for English movies.
