As we all know, the Asian pearwood(pyrus pyrifolia) and red sandalwood furniture are the standard items in the Imperial Palace of Ming and Qing Dynasties. In addition, the antler chair has always been a favorite of the emperor. According to historical records, the ancient emperors and empresses have been living in an environment surrounded by furniture made from Asian pearwood, red sandalwood, antlers, and other materials since their birth. At the same time, the Palace Museum furniture together with the couplets formed a poetic and picturesque beautiful living environment, which is also a healthy one for the royals. In order to appreciate the Palace Museum furniture and its impact on the living environment of the emperor and empress, this paper reviews the red sandalwood and Asian pearwood furniture displayed in the current Palace Museum, the historical background of relevant couplets, and the documented medical value of the two kinds of wood. It is found that the Palace Museum furniture not only has profound ornamental value and historical value but also has very important medicinal value.
