China’s rise has become one of the most influential events in the international community. When China has moved to the center of the world stage,India also attracts wide attention with its rising comprehensive strength. As two big neighbors with large population in Asia,China and India are quietly changing the political pattern of the world in the era of globalization.Under such background,Sino-Indian relations, especially how India views China’s rise, have become the hot research focus.India’s attitude towards China’s rise not only determines its policy towards China, but also affects China’s rise and the development of Asia.To investigate the attitude of Indian mainstream media towards China’s rise, the study collected 168 relevant news reports released by three prestigious Indian newspapers—The Pioneer,The Times of India,The Hindu—over the past 7 years from the database Lexis Nexis to form a corpus.Following Fairclough’s threedimensional model of discourse analysis, the study adopted a multi-layered and cross-disciplinary approach to examine the corpus:it carried a three-level analysis, including text analysis, contextual analysis and interpretative analysis and from the perspectives of Linguistics,Journalism and International Politics. On the macro-level,this study explored the attitude of Indian mainstream media towards China’s rise,China’s national image negotiated in the news reports and the underlying reasons behind the image construction of China. On the micro-level,it examined the language strategies applied in the reports. As to the research procedures, sentiment analysis was first employed to explore the attitude of Indian media towards China’s rise. Then,a corpus linguistic analysis examining high frequency words, collocations and concordance was conducted. Finally, comparative analysis was used to reveal the diachronic changes of Indian media coverage and emotional tendency from 2013 to 2019,as well as the significant difference among the reports released by the three Indian newspapers. The research indicated that when reporting China’s rise,Indian mainstream media mainly focus on the themes such as politics, economics, military and international relations. The overall sentiment of Indian mainstream media towards China’s rise is negative.Sentimental index among the 4 themes differs slightly:political reports are the most negative while economic ones are relatively positive.Besides,Indian mainstream media’s opinions towards China’s rise have fluctuated with the changing relationship between China and India,as well as the International political environment. Finally,Indian media representing different parties show slightly different attitudes towards China’s rise:The Pioneer is more hostile than The Times of India, while The Hindu is generally neutral. To sum up,Indian mainstream media tend to shape China into a competitor and even a dangerous enemy, arguing into containing China’s rise. Therefore,China should continue to explore more effective strategies of overseas publicity to present the image of a responsible and peacefully-rising country to the world.Although there are inevitable differences and conflicts on some issues,China and India, two largest developing countries, should try their best to pursue win-win cooperation, which is beneficial not only to the rise of both countries, but also to the development of Asia and the world.
